Each year we take a group from Ireland to the Order of Malta International Camp for Young Disabled, which will be held this year in Italy.
Order of Malta Ambulance Corps is a major provider of first aid training, ambulance transport and community care services and assistance to other charities in most of the major cities and towns throughout the island of Ireland. Through our youth section, Order of Malta Cadets (a National Youth Organisation), we provide a full programme of youth development and sporting activities for young people.
On Saturday 1st October Order of Malta Ireland ran a Race Course training day in Fairyhouse race course. Dr. Adrian McGoldrick, Chief Medical Officer of the Turf Club delivered a presentation which was followed by sessions on Common Racing Injuries and Medications. This was followed by a series of skill stations and scenarios. This was a very enjoyable and worthwhile training event, which will be repeated in other Regions in the near future.

A total of 31 Members of the Ambulance Corps participated in the most recent 4X4 Drivers course in Thurles on 8th October last. The course is designed to give drivers the competence to handle such vehicles in extreme conditions and over the worst terrain that any driver will meet in Ireland. Comdr. Paschal Diviney who initiated the training said “Off-Road Vehicles are extremely versatile when driven by a fully trained driver but are lethal when the driver lacks the experience of handling them. Our course ensures that the driver understands the limitations of the vehicle and respects the conditions under which they may have to be driven”. Comdt. PJ Ryan, Regional Director, Region 6, who organises these courses, stated that he was very pleased, as were the professional instructors who conduct the courses, with the performance of drivers who have attended to date. He went on to say “they leave the course with much more respect for the vehicle and with the competencies to handle them under the most difficult conditions”.
This course will be mandatory for all Order of Malta drivers who will handle 4X4 vehicles in the New Year.
The Order of Malta Ireland Annual Knock took place as usual on the last Sunday in August. This year the pilgrimage commemorated the centenary of the birth of Blessed Mother Theresa of Calcutta and Mass was celebrated by His Eminence, Cardinal Sean Brady, Bailiff Grand Cross of Honour and Devotion. HE, the President, Sir Adrian Fitzgerald and the National Director, Comdr. Winnie Maye, expressed their satisfaction at the excellent turn out of the Ambulance Corps and Irish Association for the Pilgrimage. This year more Units brought sick and elderly pilgrims to the shrine than ever before and the Cadets turned out in large numbers. Members represented all 11 Regions of the Ambulance Corps. The extended pilgrimage, headed by the Hospitaller, Dame Peta Taaffe, enjoyed a delightful visit to Ballintubber Abbey on the Saturday, and were hosted for lunch by the Castlebar Unit. Again numbers were up on previous years. We look forward to ever increasing numbers on the Pilgrimage in 2012.
The International Order of Malta Pilgrimage to Lourdes takes place over the first weekend of May each year. It is the largest of the international pilgrimages coming to Lourdes. Order of Malta Ireland joins up with approx 6,000 pilgrims from other National Associations in Europe, the Americas, and Australia to become one big family for the Lourdes Pilgrimage. Each National Association including Order of Malta Ireland brings a large number of sick pilgrims to Lourdes.
